Program & Notes:
Grammy award winner and 2025-26 Carnegie Hall Debs Composers Chair, Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz brings an electrifying voice to contemporary music. This special concert, featuring the vibrant ensemble Attacca String Quartet, presents two powerful works: Altar de Muertos, a haunting tribute to memory and tradition, and the Washington premiere of Mujer Ángel, co-commissioned by The Phillips Collection, Carnegie Hall, Encargo del Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM), and Fundació Orfeó Català - Palau de la Música Catalana.
A vivid soundscape drawing on indigenous poetry and personal mythology, Mujer Ángel captures Ortiz’s distinctive fusion of classical form and folkloric color. Ms. Ortiz will be attending in person to discuss her work, offering insights into the cultural and creative forces behind her music. This program is part of Phillips Music’s ongoing Leading International Composers series, spotlighting groundbreaking voices from around the world. —The Phillips Collection event page
